The Redleaf Challenge, now renewed for a fourth consecutive year, is named for benefactor Andrew Redleaf, founder and CEO of Whitebox Advisors, a Minneapolis based investment advisor. Redleaf and an anonymous donor who joined the challenge this year will match up to $125,000 in donations to Chesterton Academy. That makes this year’s challenge the largest fundraising initiative ever for the five year old school, which will boast an enrollment of more than 100 students in fall 2013.
Redleaf is a native of the Twin Cities and a graduate of St. Paul Academy and Yale University. A passionate supporter of classical education, Mr. Redleaf, who is Jewish, said “Chesterton offers a rigorous, classical education at a price families can afford, providing an invaluable service to our entire Twin Cities community, Catholic or not.”
Impressed with the school’s curriculum and student body Redleaf stated, “The values instilled at Chesterton are evident in the students’ academic achievement, maturity, and kindness.”
Redleaf’s challenge grant was renewed at the annual Chesterton Academy Gala sponsored by Whitebox Mutual Funds. A second surprise that evening came when an anonymous donor joined Redleaf to bring the total challenge amount up to $125,000.
The Chesterton Academy receives no government funding. The school relies on thrift, devoted faculty, and the generosity of donors such as Redleaf to keep the school affordable for families. At $5,995 for the 2012-13 academic year, the school boasts one of the lowest tuitions among private high schools in the region. Generous financial aid makes the school accessible to even more families. As co-founder Dale Ahlquist stated, “We cannot be pro-life and pro-family if we put families into debt for their child’s education.”
